HAYWARD, California — A 68-year-old pedestrian from Hayward died after being struck by a vehicle near Jackson Street and Santa Clara Street on Monday night. The driver initially remained at the scene but later fled, leaving behind a license plate, according to the Hayward Police Department.Officers responded to the incident at approximately 9:54 p.m. and found the injured pedestrian, who was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver, a 55-year-old Hayward resident, was located shortly after in the same vehicle, a small pickup truck, and provided a statement before being released pending further investigation.The identity of the pedestrian is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and identification protocols by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office. Investigators are working to determine if alcohol was a factor in the collision.This incident marks Hayward’s eighth fatal collision of 2024.
