Longtime market in heart of downtown San Mateo to close, with dozens of layoffs

Draeger’s Market in downtown San Mateo will close permanently at the end of February, leading to the layoff of 71 employees, according to a notice filed with state officials.

The closure is part of a larger plan to make way for the B Street South mixed-use development , including office space, below-market-rate housing and retail units.

While Draeger’s has locations across the Bay Area, the San Mateo store — which has been a fixture for nearly 30 years — is the only one to close…
