Officials release identity of S.F. man who died while saving dog from surf at Ocean Beach

San Francisco’s medical examiner identified the man who died trying to rescue his dog from waves at Ocean Beach, officials said Tuesday.

The man was identified as Garbo Chang, a San Francisco resident. Chang, 59, died on May 8 after entering the surf line near Lawton Street to save his dog from the water, fire officials said last week.

Two men who were nearby entered the surf to help Chang and were successful in bringing him back to shore, where they called 911 and performed lifesaving measures until emergency crews arrived minutes later…
