On the Richmond Burrito Trail: Valley View’s Los Cerros Mexican Grill

So we flew down Valley View past Adachi’s and 7 Peaks Restaurant and Bar, looking for stuffed cylinders of happiness. We pulled into the Sunset Center, an older strip mall that kind of crawls up the hillside and disappears into the surroundings. The outside sets our expectations kind of low, but sometimes salvation comes wrapped in aluminum foil and good intentions.

Inside, it’s all modern lines and unexpected grace. They renovated this place like they meant it. Clean tables, decent lighting, and a little fenced-in patio out front where you can watch the world go by. It’s the kind of unexpected taqueria that makes you forget you’re in a strip mall.

We ordered the Shredded Chicken Burrito and a Veggie. Both came out floppy but righteous. Perfect refried beans and fluffy, tasty rice, shredded chicken swimming in its own juices, guacamole for days, and cheese that melts into everything. When you cut it open, it oozes slowly and steadily. A beautiful mudslide of comforting gooeyness. The tortilla’s got that perfect toast, crispy enough to hold its ground but soft enough to give when you need it to.

At 720 grams, it hit the sweet spot size-wise. If there is a downside, it is the sameness of the ingredients. The rice, the beans, the chicken, all of it was the same. We would have liked more texture diversity, some crunchy onion bits, and some not-so-shredded chicken. Something chunky…
