Santa Rosa Police Arrest Oakland Resident for Possession of Unregistered Handgun During Traffic Stop

During a routine traffic stop late Saturday night, Santa Rosa Police Department’s Special Enforcement Team (SET) officers discovered more than they bargained for—an unregistered handgun—after pulling over an Oakland resident on a sleepy city street corner. The stop was made at the intersection of Bennett Valley Road and E Street, where SET, a squad formed in response to the uptick in gun violence and illegal weapon possession in Santa Rosa, conducts regularly scheduled patrols.

Upon inspection, officers were met with the strong scent of recently smoked marijuana emanating from within the vehicle, leading to the driver’s admission of having a blunt alongside loose cannabis inside; however, what unfolded next was an unexpected find—officers searching the car uncovered a loaded, hidden Smith & Wesson model 469 9mm handgun, according to the SRPD news release.
