Richmond Standoff Ends Peacefully: Collaboration Between Police, Mental Health Professionals, and PG&E Leads to Safe Resolution

After a tense multi-day standoff that ended peacefully, the Richmond Police Department triumphed through patience and collaboration with community partners to resolve a potentially dangerous situation. It began on Tuesday, when the RPD was called to the scene of a man who had scaled a PG&E power structure near S. 1st St. and W. Cutting Blvd., as was reported on the department’s social media. Efforts to coax him down were unsuccessful, despite the deployment of ladder trucks by the Richmond Fire Department and the power to the structure being cut.

As the standoff continued well into multiple days, the local officers, PG&E personnel, and mental health professionals worked overtime to ensure the safety of both the man perched precariously above and the community below. The Richmond Community Crisis Response Program (ROCK) and mental health professionals from A3 were at the forefront of the negotiation attempts. According to the Richmond Police Department’s post, the individual consistently refused to come down from the pole.
