The Berkeley Flea Market is on the verge of shutting down, its managers say, after years of declining attendance from shoppers and sellers have left the half-century-old institution hemorrhaging money.
Vendors were given a notice last week that the market, held on weekends in the parking lot of the Ashby BART station, will “cease all operations” on June 28.
In an interview Sunday, General Manager Yasin Khan told Berkeleyside there is still hope that the market might only shut down temporarily, or could even avert a closure altogether, if more vendors come out over its remaining three weekends.
