This week in Oakland: Juneteenth celebrations

Lots of Juneteenth events to showcase this week. In addition to the celebration highlighted below, OMCA is hosting multiple events, including the Futureproof Dinner featured in The Oaklandside earlier this week. Also, don’t miss out on Lakefest, a large outdoor festival taking over the northeast side of Lake Merritt with music, vendors and food.

Juneteenth in Oakland

One of the largest Juneteenth celebrations takes place at Lake Merritt. This year, DJs Ice Cold, Slowpoke and others will be behind the turntables at this outdoor celebration of Black culture.

The Juke Joint at Wolfe Pack Studios

Ryan Coogler’s film Sinners helped showcase Black culture and history in the South, and the Bay Area community has taken note. This Friday, to honor Juneteenth, the team at Wolfe Pack Studios, the art gallery led by artist Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith, is hosting a Juke Joint party inspired by the one hosted by the twins Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore from the movie. Expect delicious fried fish, a live band, a DJ, and much more. A 1920s-1930s dress code is required to party at the joint…
