‘A beloved institution’ is closing in the Bay Area after 50 years

A thrifty destination for generations of Bay Area shoppers has wound down after 50 years in business.

The Berkeley Flea Market, a sprawling hub of antiques and handmade goods that dates back to the 1973 opening of the Ashby BART station it calls home, closed for good on Saturday, a statement on its website read. Staff cited dwindling funding and difficulty securing grants and volunteers.

“This milestone marks a moment of both reflection and celebration—five decades of vibrant exchanges, storytelling, artistry, and kinship that made our market a beloved institution,” the notice read. “…The choice was not made lightly and is full of emotion and care for the legacy we honor.”…
