Yesterday, a pedestrian strolling along the westbound lanes of I-580 took an unexpected turn when California Highway Patrol officers made an alarming discovery. At around 9:40 AM near the Coolidge Avenue off-ramp, officers approached a 51-year-old man, identified as Mauricio Medrano Torres, who was walking with two dogs by a large encampment. According to a social media post from CHP Oakland, the officers noticed the grip of a firearm sticking out of Torres’ fanny pack during the encounter.
