Historic pharmacy that outlasted CVS and Walgreens is closing after 117 years

A beloved San Francisco local family-run pharmacy, renowned for its service to the Excelsior District since 1908, is set to close for good.

On July 15, 2025, all doors will be closed at Central Drug Store, marking the conclusion of a historic 117 year long chapter as longtime proprietor Jerry Tonelli enters into retirement.

Tonelli expressed his sentiment on Facebook sharing with customers: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement,” adding, “After almost 50 years of serving the Excelsior as your neighborhood pharmacist, Central Drug Store will be closing its doors for the last time.”…
