One of the last remaining free-parking sections in the city is going to be no more. On Tuesday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 11-1 to authorize the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to begin charging for parking in Golden Gate Park. Supervisor Jackie Fielder was the only “no” vote. The new policy directs SFMTA to set parking rates and implement the program, which is expected to take effect on Jan. 1, 2027.
The vote is part of a larger effort to address a growing fiscal crisis at SFMTA, which is facing a projected $322 million deficit by mid-2026. Despite significant strides in ridership numbers, the agency has been aggressively searching for new revenue sources. Charging for parking in one of the city’s most visited destinations is just one of the many fundraising measures on the table.
