A heated debate unfolded in Contra Costa County Tuesday as immigration advocates demanded the sheriff stop cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Dozens of people gathered in the morning outside the county’s board of supervisors building to protest the sheriff’s department’s cooperation with ICE. Troubled by heavy-handed mass deportation tactics, protesters said the sheriff should not assist in any way.
“No cooperation with ICE,” protester Laura Eberly said. “Our local resources, the folks who are supposed to be here to protect and defend us shouldn’t be picking our neighbors up and handing them over to this deportation machine to disappear them.”…
