S.F. walks back restrictive shelter stay policy for homeless families after complaints

Less than a year after San Francisco reduced the number of days that homeless families can live in shelters, city leaders have reached a compromise with homeless advocates to allow families to apply for longer extensions.

The Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing recently informed the Board of Supervisors that it is changing its length of stay policies starting Oct. 1: Families will be allowed an initial 90-day shelter stay, followed by a 90-day extension granted by the shelter provider — subject to a grievance process if denied.

Right now, families get to stay for 90 days with discretionary 30-day extensions after that, but advocates said families have struggled with the anxiety of impending deadlines and having to justify extensions…
