REVIEW: Wiz Khalifa and friends bring good vibes to the East Bay

CONCORD, Calif. — Rap superstar Wiz Khalifa and friends including Earl Sweatshirt and Dom Kennedy rolled into Toyota Pavilion on Sunday for the latest stop on their nationwide Good Vibes Only tour. The extensive lineup provided more than three hours of live hip-hop before Khalifa closed out the concert with an energetic stage show featuring a live band and an out-of-this-world light show.

Midway through his set, Khalifa lit a joint onstage and asked,

“Who’s smoking the best weed out there? the rapper born Cameron Jibril Thomaz shouted midway through his set. He and his band then launched into “Red Eye,” from his latest album, this year’s Kush + Orange Juice 2. As the image of a red eyeball surveyed the audience from the video screen behind him, Wiz Khalifa convinced many in the crowd to put two fingers in the air to celebrate the release of the sequel to 2015’s Kush & Orange Juice.

From inflatable joints being handed out from onstage, to merchandise emblazoned with cannabis leaves, to free joints being tossed into the audience by “product reps,” the concert felt more than just infused with the devil’s cabbage. Watching the concert under the covered roof of the amphitheater, most of the audience may have ended up hotboxing. Remember getting high with your friends in their car with the windows rolled up before school?…
