(KRON) — A police officer who shot and killed a former heavy metal guitarist in a standoff in South San Francisco earlier this year did so in legally justifiable self-defense. That was the ruling announced Thursday by San Mateo County District Attorney Steven M. Wagstaffe’s office.
The standoff, which occurred outside a South San Francisco home on April 28, involved Brian Montana, a guitarist and founding member of the influential Bay Area metal band Possessed. Montana, 60, became involved in the standoff with police at around 5:50 p.m. at a residence on the 300 block of Arroyo Drive.

During the course of the incident, Montana armed himself with three different types of firearm — a handgun, a shotgun, and a rifle. He also fired at officers from different locations within the driveway while seeking cover and concealment using vehicles and landscaping.
