Within the same week in late 2023, nurses and parents discovered mysterious bruises on three babies being cared for inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, triggering a criminal investigation that would end with a UCSF police officer believing there was enough probable cause to arrest a nurse who had cared for all three babies.
NBC Bay Area is not naming the nurse as she was never charged with a crime by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. She continues to work at the hospital, a UCSF spokesperson confirmed.
The unexplained injuries were reported to police in November 2023 by the hospital’s NICU manager, according to a lengthy police report obtained by NBC Bay Area’s Investigative Unit, after hospital staff deemed the children’s injuries to be “consistent with those inflicted in common child abuse cases.”…
