‘Didn’t see that coming’: Hot new Oakland burger spot is already expanding

The restaurant that serves what SFGATE columnist Drew Magary called the best burger he’s ever eaten is already opening a second location, just seven months after opening its first. Hyphy Burger, which opened in West Oakland in February, is now expanding to East Oakland, as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle (the Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms).

Darion Frazier, also known as the food influencer BayAreaFoodz, opened Hyphy Burger with his friend Akeem Hayes, also known as the rapper Guap, and investors Fakri and Zack Alwajeeh. Hyphy Burger serves crispy-edged smash burgers, fries and Fruity Pebbles and Cinnamon Toast Crunch milkshakes in a colorful red, blue and yellow space on West Grand Avenue. They decided to open in West Oakland first because it’s where Frazier and Hayes grew up, and East Oakland next because it’s where the Alwajeeh brothers are from.

“Because we were doing so well, we wanted to just keep the momentum going, and we felt like it was necessary for the community to have one in the East Oakland area,” Frazier told SFGATE. “There’s nothing over there but McDonald’s.”…
