Newsom vetoes bill intended to help S.F. expand drug-free housing for homeless people

Gov. Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill that would have helped San Francisco and other cities expand their supply of drug-free housing for homeless people struggling with addiction.

Carried by Assembly Member Matt Haney, D-San Francisco, the legislation sought to let local governments spend a portion of state funding for homeless housing on sober living facilities. Local officials have historically believed that state money is restricted from going toward drug-free housing so that homeless people are not denied a place to live because they are addicted to drugs or alcohol.

Newsom wrote in a Wednesday message explaining his veto that “recent guidance allows support for recovery housing without creating a duplicative and costly new statutory category.”…
