How 150,000 San Francisco Refugees Transformed Berkeley

At 5:12 AM on April 18, 1906, San Francisco shook to its core. The 7.8 quake ripped open 430 kilometers of the San Andreas Fault and set off fires that raged for days.

Nearly 300,000 people lost their homes. Water soon proved the only safe way out as General Funston rushed to “Save the Ferry Building.”

Ferries like the steam-powered Berkeley then carried some 150,000 scared San Franciscans across the bay…
