The California Highway Patrol responded to two separate East Bay highway shootings headed into the weekend, with one suspect in custody.
On Thursday afternoon, multiple drivers called 911 to report a man shooting at vehicles driving down Highway 24 through Lafayette, according to the CHP. At least three vehicles were hit by gunfire, but no one was injured, officials said.
Officers then located a vehicle matching the description of the one driven by the shooter driving deeper into Contra Costa County. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Carlos Ray Thomas of Oakland, crashed into the center divide while southbound on Highway 680 through Walnut Creek. Thomas tried to flee on foot, but CHP officers arrived and arrested him, recovering a firearm in the process, the agency said.
