Man Arrested for Alleged Assault and Battery in San Francisco, Faces Multiple Charges After Downtown Dispute

Chaos briefly reigned on the streets of downtown San Francisco when an alleged assault led to the arrest of Steven Ernest Downing. During a patrol near Mission and Fremont Streets, officers witnessed a verbal altercation on October 8 that escalated into a physical confrontation, culminating with Downing, 46, facing charges for a multitude of offenses, including criminal threats and assault and battery, according to a social media post by the San Francisco Police Department.

On the day of the incident, after responding to the dispute, an SFPD officer located Downing, who resisted arrest before eventually being subdued. The police further reported that the suspect had engaged in a seemingly unprovoked attack on two individuals, causing non-life-threatening injuries, which the victims declined to address with medical care.

Facing repercussions, Downing was transported to the San Francisco County Jail for booking.
