Safeway is closing a Hayward store at 231 W. Jackson St. in late February, the company said.
The grocery chain said in a letter to state officials that it expected to transfer all of the store’s 76 employees to nearby Safeways, with no layoffs planned. That’s consistent with the unionized workers’ collective bargaining agreement, Safeway told the Chronicle.
“We have been proud to serve the Jackson Triangle neighborhood over the years, and this decision was not made lightly. With our lease term ending, we have carefully considered our options and decided to shift our strategy,” the Pleasanton company said…
