Unhoused man struck and killed by Amtrak train in Oakland during encampment removal

An unhoused man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Oakland on Tuesday as city officials were clearing out a nearby encampment, city officials said.

Crews were removing an encampment near Union Pacific Railroad property at 37th Avenue and E. 9th Street just before 9:40 a.m. when a city employee saw a man standing near the tracks just before he was fatally struck, according to spokespeople from the city of Oakland and Amtrak.

The man who died was not a resident of the encampment being removed, but was recognized by city employees as a transient resident of other nearby encampments, a city spokesperson said. The man’s identity was not immediately released…
