Man sentenced 50 years to life for killing a 19-year-old during an attempted robbery in S.F.’s Portola District

A man was sentenced 50 years to life in state prison for killing a man during an attempted robbery in San Francisco’s Portola district in 2020, prosecutors said Friday.

Zion Young, 25, was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted robbery, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. Young also pleaded guilty in connection with charges related to illegally possessing a firearm on the day he killed 19-year-old Kelvin Chew, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Young shot and killed Chew on May 7, 2020, around 8 p.m. near Colby and Felton streets. Chew was on a walk after dinner with his family, holding a cell phone in his hand, when Young ran up behind him and tried to steal his phone, prosecutors said, according to surveillance video…
