A CHP helicopter turned a late-night robbery follow-up into a carefully choreographed takedown in the Oakland area yesterday, guiding officers as they trailed a wanted car from station to station before finally boxing it in at a gas pump. After a spike strip shredded the vehicle’s tires, the driver tried to bolt but quickly gave up and surrendered at the pump, ending the search without further incident as multiple agencies closed in on the scene.
How The Stop Unfolded
According to the video and description posted by CHP – Golden Gate Division Air Operations, the H-30 helicopter crew spotted a vehicle tied to a reported robbery and then stayed overhead while officers on the ground moved into position. Ground units from CHP Hayward, the San Leandro Police Department, and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office followed the car as the helicopter tracked it from above.
The suspect vehicle pulled into multiple gas stations, reportedly trying to secure fuel, while officers held off on rushing in. Eventually, units deployed a spike strip, disabling the car’s tires and forcing it to a stop at a pump, where the video shows the driver surrendering.
