Free parking, it turns out, is not a god-given right.
Oakland will begin charging for parking on Sundays from noon to 6 p.m., ending a long-standing exemption rooted in religious observance as the city looks for ways to raise revenue. Similar efforts haven’t always gone well in other Bay Area cities, notably in San Francisco where Sunday parking remains free in most neighborhoods.
