Emeryville’s dynamic urban scene is on the cusp of embracing Japanese flavor with the grand opening of Tokyo Central on January 31 and February 1, 2026. The acclaimed Japanese market chain is setting up shop at 5603 Bay Street, offering an immersive shopping experience that promotes the Japanese philosophy of Ichiju-Sansai, which translates to “one soup and three dishes,” as noted on their website. Tokyo Central aims to share Omotenashi, a term signifying wholehearted hospitality, through its diverse product line-up that includes everything from fresh produce to take-away meals. In anticipation of the opening, the store promises a $10 gift certificate giveaway for the first 100 customers who walk through the door, alongside other festive activities and giveaways for families.
According to a Mercury News article, the Bay Street Emeryville development has garnered a new 40,000-square-foot-plus anchor building, complete with a rooftop parking for approximately 110 vehicles. The store is poised to stock an array of Japanese staple foods and produce, such as Koshihikari rice and Kurobuta pork belly, as well as made-to-order meals including sushi. Furthermore, the Japanese market’s arrival marks an exciting development for Emeryville, which has never before hosted a citywide Asian grocery of this magnitude. CenterCal Properties, involved in the development, has stated that this addition reflects their commitment to representing the culturally diverse Bay Area community.
A representative from the Bay Street Emeryville complex relays that an upscale dining establishment serving fresh and authentic Japanese cuisine, is also in the works, though its identity remains undisclosed for the time being. Tokyo Central is a subsidiary of Pan Pacific Retail Management, the Japanese conglomerate that encompasses grocery establishments like Gelson’s and Don Quijote. The Emeryville location will be the brand’s second Bay Area store, with several others residing in the Los Angeles area. Fans of the supermarket look forward to their signature events, such as prefectural delicacies pop-ups and the unique Bluefin Tuna Cutting Show complete with sashimi tastings…
