Photos: Stunning optical illusion appears over S.F.’s Transamerica Pyramid

A San Francisco photographer captured a stunning optical display Thursday morning amid an unusual alignment of atmospheric conditions.

As the sun rose behind the Transamerica Pyramid, the building’s shadow appeared to flip into the sky above.

The effect, known as crepuscular rays, is caused by scattering of the sun’s rays by smoke, haze or other particles. Sunbeams that pass through gaps in clouds are the most common form of crepuscular rays, but buildings with sharp edges, like the Transamerica Pyramid, can amplify the effect, too…
