The decades-old Tokyo Fish Market in Berkeley is known for its pristine seafood, so it’s no surprise the fish counter makes one of the Bay Area’s best poke bowls. I opted for half shoyu tuna, half hamachi, the glistening cubes of supremely fresh fish paired with wakame and a burdock root salad over expertly cooked rice.

I haven’t met a Day Moon baguette sandwich that I didn’t love, whether it’s an epically juicy tomato creation in the summer or roasted broccolini with preserved lemon aioli and salty pecorino cheese in the winter. The Outer Sunset bakery only sells them after 11:30 a.m., once the sourdough baguettes, baked with fresh-milled whole grain flours, come out of the oven. On a recent afternoon, the baguette was stuffed with tender hunks of roasted sweet potato, white bean hummus, crunchy cabbage slaw and chili crisp from San Francisco Korean brand Queens. The sandwich fillings change often, but are always vegetarian and creative.
