Convicted art swindler erected fence blocking popular path to San Mateo County beach, police say

A fence that abruptly blocked a widely-used path to a popular San Mateo County beach — angering the local community — was put up by a convicted art swindler who does not own the property, local officials said.

Luke Brugnara, who was convicted 11 years ago in a federal case involving an $11 million art fraud, told Daly City police that he directed the fence to be built, Daly City Police Chief Cameron Christensen told The Chronicle on Monday night. The fencing blocks a path to Thornton State Beach in Daly City that was popular among visitors.

Brugnara was recently arrested in Daly City on suspicion of criminal threats and weapons violations, Christensen said. It was unclear whether the arrest was related to the fence issue. He has been released on bail…
