BART Green Line Meltdown Strands Rush-Hour Riders Between Oakland And SF

The BART Green Line hit a wall this morning when an equipment problem shut down service between West Oakland and the 24th Street Mission station, throwing the Transbay commute into chaos during the morning rush. Green Line trains stopped, service across the corridors sputtered, and riders were left facing long waits, packed platforms, and a lot of uncertainty.

What alerts told riders

In an alert amplified by Caltrans District 4, BART did not mince words, warning there was “no Green Line service.” The agency told San Francisco-bound riders to hop on an Orange/Richmond train, then transfer to a Blue/Daly City train. East Bay-bound riders were instructed to board a Blue/Dublin train and transfer to an Orange/Berryessa train as a temporary workaround.

What BART says about the outage

BART halted service between West Oakland and 24th Street Mission after what local reports described as a communications equipment failure that was reported just before 8:30 AM. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, crews were on scene troubleshooting the issue, and there was no immediate estimate for when full service would be restored.

Alternatives and trip planning

During disruptions, BART directs riders to bus and ferry options and its Trip Planner, which can exclude BART from suggested routes, according to BART. Commuters are advised to factor in extra travel time and be ready for multiple transfers when traveling across the bay.

Reliability context

This latest interruption adds to a growing list of service headaches that have tangled Bay Area commutes in recent months, including a May 2025 track fire that sidelined Green Line trains for days. Coverage of those earlier outages and BART’s patchwork responses was detailed by SFGATE…
