Grannies to Take Over Park Street Again (For a Good Cause)

It’s easy to hatch grand plans over a couple wide-brimmed bowls at Forbidden Island. It’s another thing to make them real.

Last January, Laura Gillan sat at the tiki bar with a friend brainstorming solutions to a problem. Gillan, who works for Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, had a goal to raise money for the organization, but she’d never fundraised before. She and her friend sketched five sensible options, along with an absurd one—a gang of grannies with curlers in their hair roving around Park Street. They brought their ideas to their Alameda moms group.

The moms picked the absurd one.

Eight weeks later, more than 175 costumed “grannies” across the age and gender gamut gathered in downtown Alameda for the first-ever GrannyCon, raising $14,000 for breast cancer prevention. This year, GrannyCon will light up Park Street again on Saturday, March 7…
