An after-midnight police call in Walnut Creek ended in gunfire last Thursday, when officers shot and killed a 46-year-old man who, they say, refused to drop an object that was later determined to be a pellet gun. He was pronounced dead at the scene in a residential neighborhood near Buena Vista and Alvarado avenues at about 12:10 AM. Family members who spoke with local reporters said he had long struggled with serious mental-health issues.
