Hundreds of Oakland Unified employees may lose their jobs as the district grapples with a $100 million budget deficit and declining enrollment.
Last week, the OUSD school board voted to eliminate 421 positions and reduce hours for another 144 employees. Unless the district finds some other way to save funds, the layoffs will become effective June 30.
Affected positions include literacy tutors; food service workers; instructional aides; noon supervisors; restorative justice facilitators; family engagement specialists; counselors; literacy and stem coordinators; nurses; social workers; substitutes; English immersion teachers; special assignment teachers; network superintendents; and assistant principals…
