Del Popolo, a pizzeria that grew from a converted shipping container to a freezer aisle mainstay, plans to close its Union Square restaurant later this spring.
The pizzeria will serve its final customers on May 8, owner Jon Darsky wrote on social media Saturday evening. After more than a decade running the restaurant, Darsky plans to “begin a new chapter” focused on the frozen sourdough pies that dominated the Chronicle’s frozen pizza taste test earlier this year.
“Months of reflection haven’t lessened my ambivalence, but ultimately it feels like the right decision and the right path,” Darsky wrote. “Changing the way people think about frozen pizza is a mission I believe in, and I’m eager to continue building on what we’ve already accomplished.”…
