$843,829 shoreline repair project begins at Lake Sumter

An $843,829 shoreline repair project has begun at Lake Sumter in The Villages.

Residents have probably already begun noticing heavy equipment and fencing going in along the shoreline at Lakeshore Cottages.

Water levels in Lake Sumter have fluctuated significantly over time, according to District Government staff. Prolonged conditions in the early 2000s resulted in unusually low lake levels, exposing shoreline banks previously stabilized by vegetation. Subsequent hurricanes and severe weather events generated increased wave action, which further scoured these exposed areas and accelerated erosion.

Now, the shoreline extending from the Lighthouse to just prior to the John E. Parker Bridge is showing areas of moderate to severe erosion and requires repair…
