Retired NYPD cop gets break after golf cart crash in The Villages

A retired officer from the New York City Police Department has gotten a break in a criminal case after crashing a golf cart in The Villages.

AnnMarie Ennis, 56, who lives in the Village of Amelia, pleaded no contest this past week in Sumter County Court to a charge of reckless driving. The charge was reduced from an original charge of driving under the influence. She has been placed on probation for one year and has been ordered to perform 40 hours of community service.

The golf cart occurred at about 9 p.m. Feb. 13 in the area of Devonshire Way and Onslow Court, not far from Ennis’ home, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, Ennis was found laying in the middle of the road and bleeding. She told deputies that she lost control of her golf cart and crashed. She admitted she had taken a turn too fast and fell out of the golf cart because she was not wearing a seatbelt. She handed a deputy her retired identification card from the New York City Police Department.

Ennis said she had gone to dinner at Havana Country Club and had been drinking. There were several indications she had been driving impaired…
