A Villager escaped injury Thursday night after driving a golf cart into a massive hole that opened up on a multi-modal path following a lightning strike.
The incident occurred when lightning struck and ruptured a 12-inch irrigation main that crosses under the multi-modal path on Buena Vista Boulevard near the Eagle Preserve. The break caused the asphalt surface to fail, jet-washing out a large hole that quickly filled with water.
Before crews could arrive to secure the scene, a resident driving a golf cart approached the area. Believing the hazard was simply standing water covering the normal path surface, the driver attempted to cross. Instead, the golf cart plunged directly into the washout.
The driver was not injured in the crash. The golf cart was later removed from the hole by a tow vehicle…
