Florida’s Attorney General Ashley Moody, Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass, and Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods have responded to new statewide drug death data. The 2022 Florida Medical Examiners’ Drugs in Deceased Persons Annual Report showed that over 6,200 people died from fentanyl use in 2022. Despite a 3% decrease in total drug-related deaths since 2018, the number of drug overdose fatalities remains high, largely due to the influx of illicit fentanyl.
Moody highlighted the impact of illicit fentanyl, which she stated is responsible for over 100,000 American deaths annually. She outlined Florida’s efforts to address this issue through criminal interdiction, opioid reversal medications, and treatment approaches. However, she noted that the issue would continue until the border is secured and those struggling with addiction seek help.
Commissioner Mark Glass agreed with Moody’s statements, noting that fentanyl is a problem in every Florida community. He mentioned the challenges posed by smuggling at the Southern Border. Despite these challenges, Glass assured that they are working to protect Florida communities, with Moody’s support.
