No bail for retired firefighter charged with leaving scene of crash involving death

Ocala police officials have charged a 62-year-old retired first responder with two counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving death. The crash in question happened on Dec. 26.

Leon A. Mims was taken into custody at his residence and transported to the county jail. He is being held without bail.

In the crash, Burgandy Evans was ejected from a motorcycle after it was hit by Dodge pickup truck. A second pickup truck, driven by Mims, ran over Evans, police said.

Evans was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where she later died. She was 30 years old and pregnant, investigators said.

Authorities said they believe Evans probably would have survived the ejection. They believe being run over by the truck likely caused her death.

Police said Mims was unable to avoid hitting Evans. And Mims stopped at a nearby business after he hit the woman. However, he left the location without providing aid to the injured woman or talking with law enforcement.
