Locals say Marion County Jail is deterrent for bad behavior, not a ‘resort’

Brenda Hale, Ocala: “I would like to first off say that everyone knows how bad the Marion County Jail is. I myself spent time there. But here’s the thing: It’s not a resort, you’re not there to enjoy your stay, you are taken there because you have committed a crime. Their health care is bad, the food is bad, and women shower in front of a half wall that, at the entrance to the pod, has windows. So when the male correctional officers enter, they also can see you in the showers. Now, my understanding on this was that they are supposed to make an announcement when men enter the section. In my experience, that rarely ever happened. There have been enough reports on this institution that the majority of people know this, or should. Perhaps people not familiar with jail do not know or care. Regardless, the bottom line is that people should be able to have their basic needs met. Heath care should be examined, along with mental health issues, and treating them in a timely manner. That being said, if you want to be comfortable, don’t break the law. Period. Thank you for this opportunity.”
