Bail denied for woman arrested in Sunday’s officer-involved shooting in Ocala

A judge on Monday denied bail for the Belleview woman who was shot at by Ocala Police Department officers when they tried stopping her Sunday.

Linda Parker Vaughn is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on law enforcement officials and one count each of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding and resisting with violence.

Vaughn, 61, was not struck by any of the officers’ gunshots, officials said.

Vaugh, at the jail, appeared via Zoom on Monday in front of County Judge Lori Cotton, who was at the courthouse. The judge cited community safety in denying bail.

The court appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent Vaughn, who must undergo a mental health evaluation.

Court records show Vaughn has a criminal history and was released from prison in early 2023.

Names of officers released and investigation

Police officials have released the names of the officers involved the shooting: Issac Mercer and Jeff VanHoose.

Mercer has been at the department for 4 1/2 years. He is a former Marion and Sumter County deputy and has been a law enforcement officer for about seven to eight years, officials said.
