FHP: Man driving to his brother’s funeral dies in two-vehicle crash in NE Marion County

A man on his way to his brother’s funeral was killed early Saturday in a two-vehicle crash in rural northeast Marion County.

Here’s what we know:

Crash location: Northeast 160th Avenue Road near 180th Street in Hog Valley.

The investigating agency: Florida Highway Patrol.

What happened? Authorities said a Hyundai Elantra driven by a 64-year-old man from Fort McCoy was northbound on Northeast 160th Avenue Road.

The driver of a Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck hauling a ATV, with another ATV in the back, was backing into a hunting spot on the east shoulder of the roadway.

Troopers said the front end of the pickup truck was in the roadway. Apparently the Hyundai driver never saw the vehicle ahead of him and the front of his car struck the side of the truck.

The car’s driver died at the location.

Marion County Fire Rescue spokesman James Lucas said his agency was assigned to the call at 6:41 a.m. Crews arrived at 6:54 a.m. Lucas said the man was pronounced dead at 7 a.m.

The truck driver, a 58-year-old man from Lutz, and his 82-year-old passenger, from Tampa, were not injured. The crash blocked both sides of the roadway, officials said.
