On Top of the World: Motorcycle rider, 37, killed in crash; other driver, 87, injured

ON TOP OF THE WORLD — An early morning two-vehicle crash Thursday in southwest Ocala claimed the life of a motorcycle rider and injured an elderly woman.

Here’s what we know:

Where was the crash? Southwest 80th Avenue and 80th Street.

Which agency is investigating the crash? Florida Highway Patrol.

What were the vehicles involved? A Hyundai Sonata and a Yamaha motorcycle.

What time was the crash? Spokesman James Lucas of the Marion County Fire Rescue said his agency was notified at 4:12 a.m. and arrived at 4:19 a.m.

FHP officials said both the motorcycle rider and the Hyundai driver were taken to separate hospitals. The bike rider was transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where he later died. The driver of the car was taken to HCA Florida West Marion Hospital then transferred to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital for further treatment. She suffered minor injuries, officials said.

What happened? Troopers said an 87-year-old woman was driving the Hyundai south on 80th Avenue and was attempting to turn left from the left turn lane onto 80th Street.
