Marion County plans changes to landscaping and tree rules that could shape how neighborhoods look

OCALA, FL (352today.com) – What should neighborhoods in Marion County look and feel like? That’s the big question county leaders tackled during an April 17 workshop focused on landscaping buffers and tree protections.

Buffers – those green spaces with trees, shrubs or fences between properties – help reduce noise, improve privacy, and make streets and developments look more attractive. Officials say the county wants to strike a balance between aesthetics, development flexibility, and long-term upkeep.

Jim Couillard, the county’s parks and recreation director and a landscape architect, indicates that the county has focused on the quality of these buffers – not just how wide they are, but how effective they are at making neighboring land uses feel more compatible.

County staff reviewed ways to strengthen current buffer rules, especially between commercial and residential areas and along busy roads. One key goal is to ensure that any buffer reductions still meet a high enough standard to be effective…
