Assisted living employee who drank before work allegedly slaps paramedic at hospital

A Leesburg woman was arrested for battery after slapping a paramedic who took her to UF Health Leesburg Hospital for medical assistance.

An officer responded to a battery at UF Health Leesburg Hospital, located at 600 E. Dixie Ave., at around 1:50 p.m. Thursday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. A Lake County EMS paramedic told dispatch that 60-year-old Belinda Anita Smith slapped him with an open hand while he was performing his official duties.

Upon arrival, the officer met with the victim who advised that he responded to an assisted living facility near the hospital. An on-duty employee at the facility needed medical assistance. Due to Smith’s cognitive function, it was determined by the victim and other paramedics that she would require transport for further care and treatment, the report said.

While in transport, paramedics treated Smith for the original medical diagnosis, and her medical metrics began to return to acceptable numbers. She still showed little to no improvement in cognitive function, at which time further investigation was performed. Smith then admitted to drinking “seven shots of tequila and vodka” earlier in the day before being dropped off at work, the report said…
