An Ocala man was arrested after an auto crash detection from his cellphone proved him to be the driver in a hit-and-run collision.
A trooper was dispatched to a hit-and-run collision on Sunnyside Drive and Park Avenue at 2:10 a.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol. The call involved a white BMW passenger vehicle. Witnesses advised that the driver, later identified as Jerome Laverne Williams, and passenger fled the scene on foot.
While enroute to the call, the trooper was told by dispatch that the Lake County Sheriff’s Office was out with two subjects who met the description given by witnesses. The trooper arrived first at Dixie Avenue where the LCSO had them detained. Prior to his arrival, Williams and the passenger had been searched for officer safety, the report said.
From the front pocket of Williams came a key fob with a BMW logo. In his other pocket was his cellphone. When the collision occurred, 911 received two notifications: one from an auto crash detection sent from a cellphone, and the second a call from one of the witnesses whose property was damaged, the report said…
