Lightning strike ignites blaze at home in The Villages

A lightning strike pierced a roof and ignited a blaze at a home in The Villages.

A 911 caller at about 6:45 p.m. Friday reported seeing smoke coming from the roof of a home in the 3300 block of Oakdale Place in the Village of Summerhill.

Units from The Villages Public Safety Department from Fire Station 40 arrived on the scene at 6:49 p.m. to find smoke and heavy fire showing from the roof over the garage. The first unit on the scene, realizing it was an attic fire, had units perform an interior fire attack and a primary search of the residence.

Additional firefighters from Fire Stations 41, 43 and 51 arrived on the scene to assist with the fire attack and overhaul. One additional engine was requested by the incident commander and responded from Fire Station 44. The fire was brought under control at 7:05 p.m.

“Due to the quick response (5 minutes and 8 seconds) and the actions of VPSD crews, the fire was quickly contained, and no exposures were damaged,” said Deputy Chief of Operations Robert Ramage…
