Driver charged with vehicular manslaughter in high-speed crash in The Villages

A woman who had been traveling at 106 miles per hour in a 2024 crash in The Villages has been charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Rhonda Michelle Gilbert, 53, was arrested earlier this month on a warrant charging her with the death of 85-year-old Michael Frank DeMulling of New York.

Gilbert had been driving a dark green 2014 Ford Fusion on the afternoon of Dec. 13 on State Road 44 and witnesses told an investigator that she had been “passing vehicles and making lane changes,” in excess of the speed limit of 55 miles per hour, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol. Crash data later showed she had been traveling at 106 mph five seconds prior to the collision, in which her vehicle struck the side of DeMulling’s vehicle on State Road 44 near the entrance to Lake Deaton Plaza.

DeMulling died Dec. 21 as the result of injuries suffered in the crash. He had been born in St. Paul, Minn. He moved to Florida and worked for a manufacturing company, but was transferred to New York where he became the general manager of a company that made automobile gaskets.
